Why Payment Methods Matter in iGaming: Insights from an Industry Expert

In the days before online casinos, casino payments were pretty straightforward. The guys and girls walk into a casino with a wad of cash, exchange it for chips with the casino’s cashier, and sometime later convert their chips back into hard cash and walk out with a suitcase full of winnings. Well, that is how it is in the movies anyway. In the film 21, they do far too much of the winning for the casino’s liking and create security alerts for all the wrong reasons.

It is somewhat more complicated in today’s online casino world; cash is no longer king, and players have a vast array of payment options. However, players still have to make deposits and have a casino account to deposit and play. Many Canadians default to Interac for all online payments, but is that the best way to pay, and how does the payment method affect the overall gaming experience? Is the first thing in your eWallet always the best choice, or are there better options like fintech solutions or debit and credit cards?

We sat down with industry expert Daisy Harrison to ask questions and find out why payment methods matter in iGaming.  As a Content Editor at independent review site Casino.org with 15 years’ experience, we thought her knowledge would be invaluable. Casino.org has been helping players find their perfect online casinos since 1995, making it the leader in this field. They feature expert reviews, smart tools, and trusted guides, and they understand payment methods thoroughly.

Hi Daisy, welcome to VancouverDelight. Does it really matter what payment methods people use? Isn’t it best to go for your usual choice?

Hey, thanks for inviting me in. Of course, people must be comfortable and familiar with the payment method they choose to use, but it is equally important not to get stuck in a rut, because the payment method you choose can affect how quickly you can start playing and how quickly winnings can be withdrawn, too. Also, some methods have limits, and some online casinos only accept certain payment methods.

Ah, ok, that makes sense. So, what are the options and differences?

Broadly speaking, payment options break down into:

  • Credit cards
  • Debit cards
  • Pre-paid vouchers
  • eWallets
  • Bank transfers

What you choose matters because of the time payments take to clear into your casino account and how quickly any winnings will be returned to you.

So, are fast withdrawal casinos always the best choice?

Not necessarily, language can be deceptive, so we always advise readers to check the small print and understand what an online casino is really offering. Just because the online casino rapidly transfers winnings to your casino account, it does not mean that the funds will be back with you physically at the same speed. eWallets tend to offer the most instant deposits and withdrawals to and from physical accounts – some payment methods can take much longer, even a few days, to payout.

When choosing an online casino and a payment method, there are many factors to consider. At Casino.org, we aim to present everything clearly so people can make informed choices. For example, a player might want to find online casinos that take credit cards, so we will always make a point of outlining the pros and cons of any payment method and give our best, independent advice.

Are there any other reasons that payment methods matter?

Yes, payment methods matter for a variety of other reasons, too. For example, the payment methods offered can be a good indication of whether an online casino is legitimate and trustworthy. A decent online casino should offer multiple payment options from recognised financial partners. If they only offer bank transfer or a payment option you do not recognise, it would be best to give them a wide berth. Reputable payment providers only offer services to reputable online casinos.

My advice is that if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t!

Bonuses can also be affected by which payment method a customer chooses. Some bonuses are tied to particular payment partners. So, if you see a bonus you like the look of, always check the small print and make sure you can use the payment provider you want. Some online casinos or payment providers might offer additional inducements for you to use one provider over another. This can really benefit the customers if they are prepared to try something new.

Some people say that using different payment methods can help with budgeting. Do you agree?

Oh, yes, absolutely. People choose different payment methods for a whole host of reasons, but keeping entertainment and everyday expenses separate is always advisable. As we see the costs of essentials rising, we have to budget accordingly. Online gambling is a great source of entertainment, but it is important for people to treat it as a cost (as they would any other form of entertainment) and hope they might get a win (rather than banking on it).

We always advise our readers to set a budget for their online casino session and stick to it. Sometimes it is easier to do this if you have a pot set aside, or if you use a specific app like Skrill or PayPal to fund the activity. It is essential never to spend more than you can afford to lose and never to borrow to try to win back losses. Wins and losses are all part of the gambling game and, inevitably, the house always wins.

Credit cards can be a good option to keep payments separate, but you do have to be disciplined. I’ve used my credit card at online casinos like JustCasino without issues. However, I’ve only done this when I knew I could repay the money quickly. It’s easy to overspend when you’re not using your own cash. Credit cards are a convenient casino payment method – but I recommend only using them when you’re in full control. Also, you can’t always withdraw from the card, which can make things complicated.

Any other advice re payment methods?

I just think people should use a method they feel comfortable with and that they are in control of. Before making any deposits using a particular method, check the terms and conditions – particularly regarding withdrawals and any possible charges. Online casinos are supposed to be fun, so you want to choose a payment partner you are confident using.
